Homework in the second grade will reinforce basic skills. After a long day at school, this should be a brief process. If time is not used wisely in school, then work will be sent home. Reading for enjoyment is always welcomed.

Author's Bag

Author's Bag is a chance for each student to create his own book.

This assignment will be given to each student two times this year. This

is meant to be fun, and for the student to use his own style to

make his book. The student will read his book to the class on

Friday, after prayers. We encourage parents to come for the

reading. More instructions will be given the week of the assignment.

Textbooks

Language Arts

Reading: McGraw Hill Reading series: 2 Anthologies, a grammar book, a spelling book, phonics book, and leveled books (2001)

Our reading program integrates Language Arts while meeting individual needs, as success in developing communication skills is greatly enhanced in a connected and purposeful way.

Math

Scott Foresman - Addison Wesley, 1999, Math

Study will focus on numeration, graphing, addition/subtraction facts, place value, patterns to 100, money, time, two-digit addition/subtraction, numbers to 1,000, measurement, geometry, fractions, and multiplication/division concepts.

Social Studies

People Together Adventures in Time and Place, Multimedia Edition, Macmillion-McGraw Hill, 1997

Time for Kids Class Magazine

Science

FOSS (Full Option Science System)

Science by Hardcourt, 2000

The focus for second grade centers on students analyzing collected data over a period of time to make predictions and understand change. Students look at heat as a way of changing properties of objects and motion as being related to position and time. Students will be actively involved in: conducting long term investigations to define change, using tools to collect data, and looking at change in properties, changes in weather, and concepts of sound.

These are very exciting hands-on programs which explore weather solids, liquids, gasses, plants, animals and sound. These programs integrate hands-on, real world science with interactive multimedia materials. Changes in rate scale and pattern will be the focus of their investigation. Science experiments will be planned on a regular basis.

Communication Policy

Communication is the key to a successful year. We will send home a monthly calendar and usually a weekly letter. When you ask your child what they did in school that day the usual response is "nothing." Rather than that question, Ask them to tell you one thing they learned each day. Hopefully they will have a response.

Conferences are scheduled system wide twice a year, but we will be happy to meet with you any time. Please write a note or call the school to schedule a meeting whenever you would like to discuss your child's progress. St. Gabriel's number is 704-366-2409.

Once again, please have your child arrive at school on time. Consistently being tardy gets your child off to a wrong start. Have them there between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. If your child is absent, please send in a note when he or she returns to school.
