Mission Statement |

The mission of the St. Gabriel School Library/Media
Center is to support and enrich the educational
environment and goals of the school. The St. Gabriel
School librarian promotes this mission by
encouraging the students to become independent
leaders and to develop the abilities to access,
evaluate and use information. The St. Gabriel School
Library/Media Center provides an attractive and
stimulating learning center with a variety of
resources and instruction available to both students
and faculty. |

To continue to guide and instruct the students
of St. Gabriel School in the effective use of
the Library/Media Center resources.

To continue to assist the students with the
required research skills necessary to
independently access, evaluate and use
information.

to both students and faculty including the
expansion of both print and non-print materials
in the collection.

Library Curriculum |

In support of the mission and vision of the St.
Gabriel School Library/Media Center, the librarian
provides academic instruction and enrichment to all
classes aligning with the grade level curriculum.
During the first quarter in grades 1-2:
-
review proper care of books, rules and
procedures of the Library/Media Center
-
help students develop listening and discussion
skills
-
introduce and review library book terms
-
help students understand the arrangement of
materials
-
help students develop an appreciation of a
variety of literature in conjunction with
classroom activities
In grade 3:
-
review proper care of books, regulations and
procedures of the Library/Media Center
-
continue to assist students in listening and
discussion skills
-
review library terms and parts of a book
-
reinforce the arrangement of Fiction and
Nonfiction books by call number
-
introduce the automated card catalog: Winnebago
Spectrum
-
support classroom curriculum by sharing
Nonfiction books on space and review fiction
genres for book reports.
In grade 4:
-
review proper care of books, regulations and
procedures of the Library/Media Center
-
continue to assist students in listening and
discussion skills
-
reinforce the use of the automated card catalog:
Winnebago Spectrum

identify and locate reference materials
-
support classroom curriculum by reviewing simple
media terms and teaching study skills found in
the new reading series.
In grade 5:

review proper care of books, regulations and
procedures of the Library/Media Center

continue to assist students in listening and
discussion skills

reinforce the use of the automated card catalog:
Winnebago Spectrum

support classroom curriculum by collaborating
with teachers on Social Studies research
project: identify and locate reference
materials, writing note cards, and preparing
bibliography of sources.

Facility and Audio/Visual Equipment |

The Library now includes an automated card catalog
system with card catalog stations and learning
stations.
The Library has been enhanced to include instruction
utilizing the Internet/TV display.
The card catalog and Internet are available from all
Library and teacher PC's. |
